Julie Taymor, Tony Award winner for her direction of The Lion King musical, is an artist internationally acclaimed for her bold and original imagination. For TFANA’s inaugural 2015 production in its new theatre, she staged Shakespeare’s joyous comedy about the universal theme of love and its complications: lust, disappointment, confusion, unrequited passion, marriage. A Midsummer Night’s Dream brilliantly conjoins four intertwined stories: the marriage of the Athenian Duke Theseus to the Amazon Queen Hippolyta; the warring Oberon and Titania, king and queen of the fairies; the madcap follies of four lovers in a forest; and the comical efforts of a group of working men creating a love-play to entertain guests at the royal wedding. Music by Elliot Goldenthall and starring Kathryn Hunter as Puck, Julie Taymor first rose to fame directing The Tempest and then four Shakespeare plays at Theatre for a New Audience in 1986 - 1994. Taymor’s fame spread globally when she created The Lion King musical in 1997. Her Tony-winning production has been seen by more than 100 million people worldwide.

Monica led the fundraising for TFANA’s $65 million new theatre in Brooklyn, named the Polonsky Shakespeare Centre, and helped to open the doors with this outstanding, magical production. The play’s run at TFANA was followed by a movie version, also directed by Taymor, with support from TFANA and Monica.
